101 Things to Do This Summer from HomeSchooling Magazine

101 Things To Do This Summer! June, 2005

As much as your kids will tell you they can’t wait for summer, the words “I’m bored,” inevitably cross their lips – sometimes sooner than you think! While children do enjoy the freedom that comes with the summer months, they still like to have a little structure to their fun.

Middle School Summer Reading List from Education.com

Remember that look in your child's eyes the the first time she started to read on her own? Even though the novelty may have worn off your adolescent by now, with the right book in her hand she can rediscover the joy of reading. "Reading books over the summer is like going on lots of vacations instead of just one. Every time you are in a book you are visiting a new place, meeting new people, and having new adventures," says Martha Jackson, veteran librarian and a literary advisor for GiftLit, an online retailer of books hand-selected by experts. "It’s the greatest ‘staycation’ ever." Does your child need a little convincing? We've searched high and low for new titles to entice even the most reluctant of middle school readers. Here's our list of favorites: 1. The Prince of Fenway Park by Juliana Baggott

Word Detective

The Word Detective on the Web is the online version of The Word Detective, a newspaper column answering readers’ questions about words and language. The Word Detective is written by Evan Morris and appears in finer newspapers in the U.S., Mexico and Japan.

Since 1995, my columns have been posted on the web a few months after they are carried in newspapers. All my columns eventually appear, in complete form, free for anyone to read, on this web site.

Mildred Taylor

Mildred D. Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on September 13, 1943, to Wilbert Lee Taylor and Deletha Marie Davis Taylor.

Life in the racially segregated South was difficult and sometimes unpleasant for Wilbert Taylor, so a few weeks after Taylor's birth, he boarded a train bound for Ohio to establish a home in the North where his family would have opportunities that wouldn't be possible in Mississippi.
